New life for an old 340 (stock stroke)

sounds close to what i just built , 70 block molnar h beam rods crappolla pistons could not find a good set of mahle pistons trickflow heads and hughes 1.6 rockers makes 450 hp not to bad , have yet to install . not bad 340's rule. Maybe one day we will meet I can't be that far from you
 
Dang, this is a great build. I think I'm going to be doing something pretty similar but with a stock stroke 360.
cam one size smaller, heads a little better with a closed chamber.
The TorkerII intake is one that is tempting me but I think I'll use the RPM Airgap knockoff that I already have.

Great thread Ram, I'm getting ready to go back through my 340 and have been flirting with stroking it but damn it I love that Short stroke 340 and well let's just say I'm more confused than ever LOL. My confusion aside great build and the fact that it was done with a iron X head even makes it more impressive.

don't stroke a 340 use a cheap 360a 340 is to rare to butcher
 
What exactly do you have to "butcher" on a 340 block when you put a stroker crank in it?
I never got that ether. Also, “Save the 340 block because it’s rare.” Even worse for me is “What’s the numbers on it?” On what I’m doing. Who cares? Of course with the reply of “Someone may be looking for it.” In which I don’t care and there really is no worry of that of someone looking for it.

Most 340 cars ether went big block or have been since crushed.

I agree with you when it comes to $$$ . It's not that the block gets butchered it is however an absolute fact that a useable 340 block is alot more $$$ than a useable 360 block-FACT. Case in point --Had a customer come in with a completely blown up 416/340 and wanted me to make it right. OK--check the block--cracked at the bottom of the cylinder(I probably made a thread about this one) Report my findings to the customer and he tells me the budget and wants TF 190's and 500+hp. He also tells me he absolutely wants a 4340 forged crank and he has 3x 360 blocks to choose from. I tell him perfect-journal overlap makes a stronger crank and he can drop down to a Scat 9000 series crank and basically have his cake and eat it too type deal. He comes back a week later with a $1500 340 block and states "A 416 runs som much harder than a 408" He also states he wants that forged crank no IFS ANDS or BUTS. I tell him he just ate $3k out of his budget and now the cylinder heads are off the table and he is OK with that. I'm like WTF? Because I see 360 blocks with the larger mains as a win/win/win in a stroker application. Alot cheaper(just as strong crank) I've made almost 650hp with the SCAT 9000 4.000" , bigger stiffer main diameter, common much cheaper block, not as much shame if the engine fails, slightly more piston/ring options due to the 4.03-4.06" range, etc.. <<< might even be a couple points I'm missing. The only plus of a 340 is a possible bigger bore and the smaller journals. Maybe thinner bearings as well.
These points aren’t a win win for me. Well, thinner bearings are, but, I’m not worried about the smaller journals and thinner bearings. The bigger bore is a plus and a minus as most people are not thinking about cylinder wall thickness. Just maximizing the engines bore size and cubic inches.
