I always noticed that people will cover/hide the license plate when they post on craigslist or marketplace. What is the reason for doing that? I'm not afraid to show my plates, in fact, I'm kinda proud of my "69 CUDA" plates"!!!!!!.

I bet these types are really nervous about driving around in public. :D

I think it's urban legend about any real risk. Especially when often times the same individual has every intimate detail of their personal life plastered all over FB

I think it’s a unwritten rule that if you block out your license plate you need to remove your fender tag also.

Although most (all?) businesses now don’t allow employees to do random searches for personal data, someone with a plate number could find out where the car parks/lives. Not saying the person of the insurance company or DMV would be directly involved in ‘stealing the car or swiping parts off it’ but they could have acquaintances who do that sort of work. Covering the plates just makes it a little harder to find out where the car resides.
However, if the car owner has his/her house address posted in photos all over his/her social media accounts, it’s a moot point hiding his/her plates in other photos.

a lot of folks have access to that sort of data and some may want or need to not be found. I never thought about theft but I can see "curious" government officials snooping on identities.

It used to be that anyone with a license plate number could go to the DMV and request an owners record. I know that hasn’t been possible in California for quite awhile now, at least not as a regular citizen just walking in off the street. You need additional documentation/licensing to make that happen now for privacy reasons.

Not sure what can be done in other states or what sorts of qualifications would get you that access. But certainly, posting your cars license plate on an open Internet forum is way different then just driving around. Lots more “eyes”, and very different ways to search for data. Just raises your exposure for theft and fraud of varying different kinds. I mean, a custom plate could give away names, or internet password hints, whatever.

Although yeah, if you take a picture in front of your house, just blocking out the plate might not be good enough. An address, a street sign, heck even just local land marks can be enough to find that house and car. I’ve done it, looked up cars from Craigslist and found the owners home address based on what was in the background of the sale pictures. You know, get a drive by in before talking to the owner. If it’s parked on the street it’s in the public domain.

There was a case awhile back where thieves were using Google earth/street maps to choose their targets and case the homes/properties based on what was in the yards, driveways, get basic home layout etc. The vent pipes on the roof will tell you where the kitchen and bathrooms are.

Well, a lot of that stuff makes sense..............but if you contact the seller he/she HAS to tell where the car/truck is so you can see/drive it???? Then you could still steal it or take parts off of it. If you use one of those "throw away" phones you can't be traced!!!!

Right, there’s always a scam. But the seller doesn’t HAVE to tell you where the car is parked. They could meet you somewhere, like, I dunno, a parking lot with a police substation. Or a camera at least. And I’m sure you wouldn’t tell your home address to every single person that calls, there’s no doubt a scenario where someone calls you and you tell them to “have a nice day” and not give them any information at all right? Well, if you leave enough info in your picture you’re basically giving everyone in the world with internet access your home address.

Doesn’t have to be a local thief to be a problem, somebody on the other side of the planet could use your address, name you posted in the ad, model and year of car to hack all your passwords? Or link it to other internet profiles you’ve got to get more info and then hack you. Obviously at some point you’re probably gonna get hacked no matter how careful you are, but you don’t have to put up a sign with all your information either.

They must be in the Witness !
