Scream'n 318 ?

The thing is, I cant understand why you would want to drill a magnum block for head oiling holes anyways. I think early ones had the oiling holes already in them. Arent magnum heads superior to LA heads? I mean dont people put magnum heads on LA engines quite a bit?

Probably depends on what a fella ha son hand for heads and rocker gear. I wouldn't want Magnum heads, mostly because I have all LA rocker parts and pieces. But if I had a lot of Magnum parts around, I might think differently.

I also don't see many aftermarket Magnum heads. At least not as many as LA. So that likely factors in too since so many folks upgrade piecemeal style and plan for future upgrades.

You could always drill the magnum block and then the holes are there for different LA heads in a pinch.

Magnum heads are a nice improvement over stock 318 heads, or smog 360 heads. However, if somebody is looking for the rocker shaft assembly and more options for heads, the LA style heads offer all of that.

I've ran LA Edelbrock heads on a Magnum block. I drilled into the back of the heads existing accessory hole and down the last rocker shaft hold down till they met in the middle, then made a "banjo" bolt and oiled the rockers like that with oil T'd from the sending unit port. There is more than one way to skin a cat.... that engine was strong as an ox!

A guy in a 69 Chevelle SS396 got beat 4 times, one from a dead start and one from 70 MPH to over 100 MPH. He got so pissed, he followed us into the store parking lot, did a lot of yelling and kicked the right rear quarter panel.

Both rear quarters had 22 pounds of lead shot poured in so they were SOLID as a rock and he broke his foot.

No, he did not pay the $50 he challenged us with.
Laugh my *** off! What a sore LOOSER!

yeah,..this thread started out bout a screamer,..but ended up not even a good moaner!! if i had the money id build a 318 that scream like lassie from porkys!!

I'm working on a screamin or moaning 318. Whichever you think it will be. Waiting on machine shop jail for my block and rotating assembly. Final hone, decking, and rotating assembly balance. Then I can assemble the bottom end. Maybe this week they will get to it.

I still want to do a screamin 318 to join Austin Griggs and his meet he has.

who's Austin Griggs and what is this meet he has???
Austin Griggs is a member who I quoted below. To brake down the story in super short, he is a enthusiast like ourselves & very enthusiastic about his rides. As many of us on the short end of the money stick, he works with what he’s got. Now fast forward a bit.

He put together a car meet/race where he challenges MoPar owners to get there 318 to perform at its max in the 318 challenge. The meet/race has evolved to include everybody in 3 basic classes, which break down into basic categories, street, street strip, strip. Rules are pretty loose and where your ride is placed is a non negotiable item. Run what ya brung!

I would like to plan a screamin 318 for his meet.

Austin, take it away!

Other than heads, is there anything that makes a Magnum block more special than a roller cam LA block? I heard theres some magnum 318 blocks that have really thick walls and can take one helluva overbore. Casting #s on those? Casting dates? What to look for? Lots of magnums in my junkyard.

That’s me! Got a race coming up October 22nd it’s 1/8mile heads up in Alabama it’s called the #MoparVsBrandXstreetcarShowdown. That hashtag will get you to info on any social media and you can find it at my pages @RattyMuscleCars IG/FB/TicTock/YouTube. But in addition to the 3 classes of racing we run we have a standing challenge to anyone who has “318 Blocks” it’s called #318Fest and keep tech cards special for that with details for each that attempt and have posted in RattyMuscleCars.com. Current fastest is a ‘90 Ram who ran 7.87. Anyway, pleasure to meet your acquaintance and I’ll attach the event here on FABO. 4th Annual #MoparVsBrandXstreetcarShowdown Oct. 22 (Alabama)

LOL.... It started out as I was "considering".... first line of the opening post. I still am considering, but I'm 1000 ft underwater in projects. A lot of times I think out loud and gather others ideas while in the "simmering" process. It's why I put a question mark in the title and the first word was "considering". :D :D

@AustinGriggs :

In the “318” class. Is there a class for 318’s and stroker 318’s? I myself am not concerned with overbore sizes. Though closer to an actual 3.91 stock bore the better IMO!

Try for the meet in a year or two years. That should give you plenty of time to get a 318 at the ready.

For myself, the travel distance has been shortened greatly upon my retirement. This has been something I e been wanting to do since it’s inception. The cards haven’t fallen right yet. But look a whole lot better now.

Ha !! This made me laugh, great post ! Only, if I do it, it will have nothing to do with "showing the other guys" up. I still plan on doing something along the lines of a scream'n 318, but it will have to be on the patient list. I'm underwater without a snorkel in projects at this time. Now I'm turning towards the NNN van at this point on the project list. I still have some things I want to do with the '76 Duster this year !!! I'm determined to make it happen!

I think saying Magnum heads are "better" than LA heads is a stretch. IMO, they're "different" and that's about all.

Have all the moaning, growning screaming squealing you want.
If it can make and take the horsepower, that's all I need. lol :D

I'd be happy with having one car, most on here have several.
