1960 Valiant Headlights:

Hey I have a very clean but new to me 1960 V200 with headlamps not lighting - but the lights work fine on bench test.
Question:
Where is fuse to these?
Does dash switch tend to fail?
Tnx-

Do you have power out of the headlight switch or high low beam switch?

You can go to my Mopar.Com and see if there is a wiring diagram for your car. Or nearest year.

IIRC there is no fuse for the headlights.

Circuit breaker inside the head light switch but it is self-resetting, unplug the 3-wire connector on the dimmer switch and with the headlight switch pulled out do you have power to one of the terminals?

I don't believe there is a fuse for the headlights either. Even if the connections "look" good, they can be bad. Unplug the headlight switch connector (disconnecting the battery first), take a good look at the terminals, then reconnect the battery and test the terminals in the plug with a test light for power. If you have power, reinstall the plug on the switch and check for power on the another terminals while operating the light switch. If you have juice going in, and still have no output, the switch is bad. Not real common, but, it does happen. I would bet it's more likely not getting power to the switch, or, it has power, and the dimmer switch is the culprit. Very common to have a bad dimmer switch.

There is no fuse. The light switch has TWO separate power sources. The fused source supplies the tail lamps and parking lamps, and feeds to the dash dimmer switch.

The headlights are powered by an UNFUSED tap off the "welded splice" in the black ammeter wire under the dash. The light switch has a breaker in/ on the switch

The "path" is ammeter black wire---welded splice--light switch--breaker--through switch and out connector--to the dimmer switch--select hi or lo beam and feed out through the bulkhead connector to the lamps

The way to troubleshoot this is to check right at the dimmer switch. If no power there, pull the light switch.

And this would affect the headlights
Power from headlight switch goes into the dimmer switch on the floor.

From there it goes either to the low beam or high beam bulb filiment.

Also if the grounds are not connected on the front of the car behind the grill that would cause the lights not to work too

60 and 61 Valiants, and 61 Lancers used individual fuses on certain circuits. Buried in the wiring harness. Vert poor design, rectified in the 62 Models with a fuse box.

I thought so my 1st car was a 61 Belvedere and I don't remember it having one, but that was almost 50 years ago

1960 wiring discussed a bit here. Does not use a welded junction to make to a 'main splice'. Alternator output joins battery line at the ammeter, connecting to the headlight switch along the way.
