How much did a gallon of gas cost when you first started driving?

-
I remember filling up my Jeep for under $20, so gas would have ben right around $1 a gallon back in the 97 time frame.
Heck, I could drive my 4.0 Jeep from Tampa to just N of Daytona (Ormond Beach) just 2 years ago for that! And that was going through Orlando...

In 1972 Sunoco 260 was $0.29 a gallon and my 442 requested it.

As a kid in the late 60's I remember my father pulling into a gas station selling gas for 19c a gallon, he immediately exits and goes across the street and gets it for 17c a gal

My sophomore in high school, cousin was a year older, had a Jeep. Decided on one of our half days to go up to Hooters about 50 miles away. Gas light comes on, the other two guys with us plus myself were chipping in for gas, my cousin pulls into the station, but sees that the price is 5 cents higher than the station we’d passed 10 minutes before, so he turns around, drives back in that direction, 3 miles later , we’re alongside the road out of gas.

:rofl: Sounds bout right for a HS sophomore :rofl:

69.5 cents here. 18.4 cents for federal excise tax and 51.1 cents State of Commiefornia.

You forgot about State sales tax... With fuel at $5 a gallon not including tax thats an additional 41 cents.... So 69.5 plus 41 = $1.10.5. Thats right one dollar and ten cents per gallon... And feel in California is actually higher than $5 a gallon before taxes...

I remember in the late 80's paying 4.00 for Cam II fuel and that was an obscene amount of money for fuel back then...... I hope it get to 15 per gallon so the wound is deep and long and it helps people realize their actions have consequences....

I started driving at an unbelievable age (farm tractor) , dad was buying it for .19 cents a gallon back then in a price war , used to take 4 - 55 gal. drums to town and fill them and the truck up.!!

the deep wound would be the common working man loosing everything and the oil corporations making yet more record profits is that the kind of consequences you hope for?

I remember paying just under a dollar a gallon like $0.97 but then again I made 3.35 an hour...
Now it's $6 a gallon and I make $40 an hour...
Gas is only went up six times as much but I make 12 times as much....

Non-E REC90 cost me $5.24 a gallon last weekend. Highest I have paid ever for any petroleum product!!!!

$54 to fill the fish and was just under 10 gallons, Thankfully it was not empty! I am really going to hate filling the motor Homes 100 gallon Diesel tank! My wife wants the Beach hard though as I do and we are skimping to save for the trip in august!

I remember when gas first got to $1 a gallon, we thought the world was comin to an end. It was just unheard of.

That's the way to do it. Fill it before it's empty. I've always done it that way.

Your Memory is short!

Even in Massachusetts at the age of 15, Gas was 65 cent a gallon to fill my Honda motorcycle! Thank God I got home to the south where I belong!

This was after the 72 Gas crisis!

How is my memory short? I gave no date for comparison, so you can't know that.

just wait until gas is 10 bucks a gallon and we're only portioned 10 gals a week.
you know there's going to be a food, fuel and money shortage.
Yesteryear is gone and your 40bucks an hour will be the new 5.25.
Premium was 57 cents a gallon in Boise when I started driving in 1976.
I was making 45 a week part time after school.

I'm afraid it's coming. I truly hope not, but I'm afraid it is. It all could have been avoided so easily. I'll just stop right there.

I honestly don't know how some of you older guys remember how much a gallon of gas was when you started driving (without Google).......I'm sure some of you claim to remember having your umbilical cord cut also.

I cannot remember how much gas cost when I started driving....but I do remember that milk was 2 cents a pint for many years as a kid.....shock horror when it doubled to 4 cents.
Gas was cheap back then, and every few cents would make my father and more so my Grandparents cringe.

While we're on the subject of gas prices....you guys are lucky to have such a small percentage of your gas price as tax.....over here tax makes up nearly 60 percent of the cost.
