I am new to 4 speeds so pardon my ignorance. But I wanted to swap handles on my shifter mechanism, the handle I want to use has the holes in it instead of the spring clip. I can just drill 2 holes where the indents are to use the new handle?

The lever you have is from a Hurst Competition Plus. The one in the picture is a Hurst, but is called a bayonet. They do not interchange. You need all of the rest of the Competition Plus. If you drill holes in the bayonet mechanism, you are ruining an expensive stock shifter mechanism.

Will the new handle slip into the shifter all the way ? If so then I would (and have ) drill the holes . Just make sure the holes line up .

I posted the link to the ONE part you need to swap out to make it a bolt in handle mech. I actually just did one yesterday.
Whats the number on the reverse lever? If its a 7180 it would be E body 1970 only and has a little more value than most others.
If I were you I would go ahead and do a full rebuild on it. The rebuild kit is about $100 from summit racing. The handle carrier is $20 from brewers. You can get the clamp plate for the handle for $15 on ebay. Handle stiffener mounting plate for 3 & 4 speed Hurst bolt-on stick shifters | eBay (brewers is out of stock at the moment).
Here is a pic of one I did last week. I strip them down, glass bead and black oxide all of the parts.

If I recall, you cannot put a bolt in handle in a slip in mech. There is something different about it that locks it in. Its been a while but I do remember trying it once.

I definitely don't want to ruin it then.

That looks lovely. I never took one apart before. I'm not against learning but I'd hate to ruin it. It came out of a 68 Bbody I believe.

I rebuilt my stock bayonet style shifter a year ago with a competition plus kit from Dan Brewer.
I highly recommend you do that while you have it apart, its pretty straightforward.
The bayonet style was a pain in the *** to remove and maybe a little easier to install, but it works really well when completed.

Brewers offers a rebuild service. I think passon does as well. I could do it but it wouldnt be any cheaper than they are.
Yours has been sandblasted. I would at minimum take it apart for a cleaning. There is no way to get all of the old grease and sand out without disassembly. If you buy the kit it comes with detailed instructions. Its not difficult at all and requires no special tools. Take a bunch of pictures of the levers before taking it apart.
