Car stories....and I mean stories

Our friend in high school had a 70 roadrunner 383 with a 3.91 sure grip... He went on the highway near hear and tried to break the tires loose from a 45 MPH roll... Downshifted into first at 45 MPH and nailed it... When he let off the gas a lifter had collapsed... It didn't pump back up and we had to change it... Way to go Scooter....

I used to always say "street racing is about who chickens out first..." alot of these cars will do 150 but people never get them going up that fast...

Thank goodness my cars can't go that fast, I can stay in it till the end! As I watch the tail if the car I'm racing pull ahead...

Used to drive around in a 70 Duster(or any car we were in but I had a Duster) with a case of beer on the back seat,we'd toss the empties out the window and reach over and back over the bench seat and grab another...

An old friend of mine told me a story about after an out of town high school baseball game where the players drove themselves. He was in a car with three other guys I knew (or knew about). One of them looked old enough to buy beer at 15 so he bought them each a six pack. That guy is in the front passenger seat in front of my buddy. Eric (the guy in front) chugged his first beer and tossed the empty out the window. Tony (my buddy) told him not to do that as there was a cop. Eric muttered FU to Tony and chugged another and tossed it. Tony repeated himself and so did Eric. Shortly after Eric chugged and tossed his third beer the cop lit them up. With the four of them piled in the back of the police cruiser he looked at them and asked if they wanted to know how stupid they had been. He pointed out Eric's empties back to the first one. He said, "see that can, see that building that says Atwater Police Department? We were just coming on duty when you tossed the first can." Nothing much happened to them except their parents were called to come get them...1979 was a vastly different time.

I had a 76' Dart Lite, used to put the bottles of Pabst Blue Ribbon in the rear foot wells and poured the ice over them! Got stopped by one of the few Officers for speeding, I knew him, huge guy that could of picked me up off the ground with one hand by the top of my head, being a Shrimper I pretty much knew everyone, any how told us to go home and don't come back out unless his shift was over! Oh the good old days. I'm so happy we didn't hurt anyone.

In '68 my friend's uncle drove up in a brand new 440 4 spd GTX, we were 16/17 years old. He asked if we wanted a ride in his new car. As we drooled we got in the car. I live in a port city and we have a large bridge (Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge). My friend's uncle drove toward that bridge. We were excited as he goosed it and the tires would break loose. We started up the really big bridge as he floored the car going through the gears. We were nailed into our seats as we drove uphill in a very powerful car!! It was great!! We finally got to the crest of the bridge doing about 120 (maybe more)?? As we topped the bridge we saw that there had been an accident on the decending side of the bridge. Cars were piled up and the traffic was stopped. As soon as my friend's uncle saw the car pile up he layed on the brakes. We skidded (down hill) for hundreds of yards as we approached the pile up. The GTX was sliding side to side and we held on for dear life. We finally came to a stop a few feet from all the stalled cars. DAMN>....Those were the good old days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yup. Loads of torque and power combined with dumb brakes. Did not matter how careful you were adjusting them, one always applied just a bit before or more than the other. Mostly referring to the front brakes. This caused them to pull one way or the other.
Then there was cars like the Mazda RX3 that used solid disc 9" rotors the same as the 808 and Pintos but with twice the power. Factory at 6500RPM was 105HP. Torque was flat from 3500 onwards. I ran mine to 9000 regularly. Do the math and that is 150+ HP. Cooked the brakes a few times. I was going to put Volvo 240 series brakes on it. I now read many Auzzies have done that and changed to 14" wheels.

Is this a test?

Changing the engine would have no effect on the speedo.

Changing the rear end gears would, but you said the donor car (Newport) had 2.76, but the GTX had 3.55.

Why would you change the rear end if the engine was blown?
Wellll, the speedo drive gear on the trans output could havve a different tooth count and affect the speedometer. Of course checking as the colour was generally different for different tothh counts and then pulling the tail housings to switch gears is quickly done.

My dad special ordered a 70 6bbl Roadrunner convertible in 1970, nowadays he says that Chrysler thought it was such a good idea that they decided to make 49 more. Problem is that there are on 42, but that doesn’t slow him down any.

That ain't nuthin. I've done all that while doin two chicks at the same time.....drivin from the back seat. Amateur. lol
