Im considering having a 4 cylinder flat head block sleeved. Its already 60 over and although there is 80 over pistons available, I dont want to go that big and my block is numbers matching
I read were the very bottom of the block isn't bored to leave a shoulder for the sleeve to hit.
Is that standard procedure? Should a good shop be able to sleeve a block properly?
Has anyone had it done before

They bore a hair under sleeve OD size, then press the sleeve in with a .00x interference fit then trim off the deck on a mill or whatever. Tell them to bore it with the MAIN caps ON and TORQUED! $150 a hole here.

A year ago I had 1 sleeve put in a 4 cylinder Onan diesel engine because water had gotten in only 1 cylinder & pitted it bad. Tha machine shop in Denver put the sleeve in. I just looked at the block & they did not leave a shoulder for the sleeve to bottom on. I hope it holds up OK when I get it back together & running.

i thought every aluminum engine made was sleeved...should work perfect if done correctly.

Never had a sleeve installed with a step in the cylinder and I have run a bunch of sleeved Fords and Mopars.

Usually the block will still need to be bored to the next oversize as the sleeve distorts the adjoining cylinders.

They bore the block , install the sleeve then bore the sleeve to match the other cylinders.

Exactly , however the sleeve being driven in place can distort the adjoining cylinders or cylinder , which would require an overbore of all the cylinders to the next size to correct

That is true, but I'm guessing the OP is wanting to sleeve all 4 cylinders and in his case the distortion wouldn't be an issue.
