So I have a 68 B body 4 speed. To install it correctly in a A body. I just need the proper tail shaft and main shaft for a Abody 4 speed? I know those are expensive to get. I'm fine with that, if it means it will get done right. I understand there are other ways the B/E body Trans can go in without those pieces but I like to do things right if.i can.

In 1981 I put a B-Body Hemi 4-speed in a 70 Duster with a flame hammer and a welder, cut the trans mount, fabricated some mounts, and welded her together...LOL..

Put a Gear Vendor on it. You need the B body long tail shaft for the GV to work in an Abody. If it were me, I’d not cut up the B body trans, and find an Abody trans.

curious. If one where to go that route. Wouldn't the shifter be in a bad position?

Carlisle is coming up in a couple of weeks. Maybe you could find one there or maybe someone here can trade or sell you a A-body 4-speed. If you decide on converting the one that you have just make sure that it has the small bearing retainer. If you haven’t already done so you should post your request on the B-body only web site also.

That is the right way to do it. It is just a lot easier. You can also sell the B/E body main shaft and B tail housing. Like said above, make sure you have a 307 front bearing main case.

Actually, I have put a long-tail into my 68 Barracuda (360 engine); the rear mount is in the same place as all A833s. All you need are:
1) a shorter driveshaft, With a matching front yoke; and
2) if a B/E body tail, then you have to grind a bit off the front shifter-mount so it will fit inside the T-Bar X-member without rubbing; and
3) you have to fabricate a new shifter plate to use the rear-most mounting pad.
>>As for the mounting pad;
I never liked the factory location, but with a benchseat, yur sorta married to it. I have buckets; so I took this opportunity to make a new adapter, to move the shifter back a good 7 inches, moving it a bit over towards my thigh. I installed a fairly short stick, (a Mr. Gasket BANG! Shifter circa 1971). And finally, I purchased some tubing, big enough to insert and weld in, the cut-off parts of the shift-rods on one end; and just the right size to tap the other ends for the adjusters, and bent them to fit.
Now I can hammer that stick with my back firmly glued to the seat-back. Missed shifts are a thing of the past.
>But if your trans has the larger(4.8") front retainer on it, and your BH is only 4.35"(FactoryStock for SBMs), you will have to deal with that. There are three ways;
1) machine the retainer to fit,(not sure if that s possible)
2) purchase the proper one from DC (if still available)/or Brewers, or
3) get a BH off an overdrive A833, and/or the matching front retainer, or alternatively, machine an adapter ring to install your whatever-sized retainer into the 5.125 hole. If you get the od BH, make sure to also get TO-fork and it's pivot, plus the Z-bar anchor; as they are all different.
