1300 hp mercury comet brake failure crash

-
True- I appreciate the video because it will make people think.
I will armchair quarterback one part...
He's riding the brakes because his throttle is sticking, and yet decides to get on it. That there was a really bad move.
With 1300hp. Ya THINK? lol

Yep remaining calm and thinking clearly in a few seconds, not many people can do.
I`ve always thought if in a stuck open throttle situation is to kill the engine and have the whereabouts not to lock the steering column:eek: and riding a guard rail or jersey wall to slow down if without brakes.
People want to sue for a tap in the *** and claim neck injury these days:realcrazy:
That was a lot more than a tap on the ***. It never should have happened, the car should not have been on the road.

Oh my, he`s eating that car. I feel bad of the damage , but making it right to all those who were affected, his insurance is going to skyrocket, and being put online for the world to see, he may not even find a carrier to even touch him.

From the guy himself.
This is Russ, as I sat in the hospital for a couple days, I replayed everything in my head hundreds of times, things that I should have noticed as a warning, and what I could have done differently. I’ve seen lots of comments so I’ll address a few of them, not being defensive at all. In a normal car throttle sticking at 2200 RPM’s is not the end of the world, in my car that’s 900 ft/lbs of torque. I should have realized the load that was putting on the brakes. Didn’t cross my mind at the time. FYI: It had double springs on the throttle. In a normal car, I could have pulled emergency brake, I even got a quote at Good Guy’s Del Mar for an electronic e-brake & bigger brakes. Hindsight’s 20-20, I was just gonna trailer it to a few shows & not drive it much till I could do that. Why didn’t I downshift? Car had a B&M ratchet shifter, once I shifted up thru the gears you can’t downshift till you put it in park. So much going on in those last few seconds, forgot to downshift it after putting it in park, but it was probably too late to have had a big reduction in speed. As far as I know, driver of van was not seriously injured. Beauty of a modern car with crumple zones, self tightening seat belts & air bags. Car had liability coverage but no collision, I was still in the process of getting stated value insurance

I read that and again it's all about him and his car. Pathetic.

I read that too. As far as he knows... the people weren't seriously injured?
Seem his insurance people would have known for sure. Strange

I've had ratchet shifters, been a while, but I don't remember not being able to downshift...just a reverse lockout.
Maybe he had a special race one. I dunno...and yeah a throttle sticking at 2200 RPM is a big deal even on a "normal" car.

My opinion is he is a dumbass and didn't know how to use the shifter. I know of not one single ratchet shifter that will not shift into whatever position you want at any time.

The **** people do for "views".

When he made that comment about an 'impactful' year.....I hope he catches the monkeypox. Prick.
Sure accidents happen but this jerk was negligent. No E brake? Throttle sticking so he keeps driving it riding the brakes
All of this and they have the balls to put out another U Tube video like there doing a public service to wear shoulder harness
Maintain your vehicle, make it roadworthy for openers
What about the poor people in the mini van, he hit that vehicle hard enough to hurt whoever was in that van
Attention seeking losers with deep pockets, small wonder he's been divorced twice

I'm not excusing what happened and there is a lot to be learned from this. But i'll ask a few questions to be answered to yourself ( not on this thread).

At anytime in your life have you knowingly driven a vehicle with brakes that weren't working properly?

Do you test the emergency brake on a regular bases to make sure it works before you go for a drive?

Have you ever driven a vehicle with out safety belts or not buckeled up in one that does have belts even if it's just for a short trip?

Have you ever made a split second decision in an emergency situation that after having time to think it over you would have done differently?

Please don't give your answers in this thread.

If my throttle were showing signs of sticking or I smelled brakes I would immediately idle to side of road take a look and assess and possibly get it towed back home.

My brakes are all new on my car, every component, but before taking it out of the garage I always pop the master cylinder lid and take a look at fluid level. Hobby cars that sit the majority of the time need extra attention and scrutiny.

But regardless sad to see that happen. Horrible situation.

You missing the point. He was driving a car with a sticking throttle and riding the brakes to the point of brake failure. For 200 grand that car should have a dual master and yet the pedal went to the floor.
Even the passenger tells him he smells the brakes and yet the guy keeps on driving faster then he should be and even gets on the car.
I dont know what this guy does for a living but I sure know he can't possible be driving a tractor trailer
They wreck a car, rear end some poor person stoped at a light than have the balls to put it all out there on a video
Attention seeking whores anything for a dollar

You missed my first sentence.

For as many issues as they were having, why not just pull over and fix them? Video's can be stopped and edited. Would have been the smart thing to do.

Lets see, no handbrake, sticking throttle and riding the brakes. Chevy engine in a Ford, what could go wrong. Never heard how the minivan driver turned out

Hate to see stupidity like that, car should have never been on the road.
His insurance company is going to blow a gasket when they see that video, totally negligent.
I pray for the folks in the mini van he hit.

I have a B&M Ratchet Shifter and it will upshift and downshift through the forward gears without issue.
All the guy had to do to slow and perhaps stop the car was to down shift to 1st and shut off the ignition.
But then all they guy had to do to prevent the whole issue was to properly build and set up the car prior to driving it on the street, in traffic.

That video reminded me of the dipshit pilot Trevor Jacobs who staged his plane malfunction and wreck for Youtube views.

Appreciate the OP sharing. Anyone that sees it will take something positive away regardless of where they are in the hobby or how well the grey matter works up there. I, for one, will be wearing the top parts of my harness more often (for example).

You would think that after $208K, all the parts would be high quality, and that baling wire wasnt part of the tools.
Was that clacking when he put it in park the Parking gear trying to engage ?

But you don't get "views" doing that. These assholes went out on the street for one reason and one reason only: "VIEWS"
Whether the accident was staged for "more views!" or not, that's what drove these selfish, lazy, self-centered pricks to leave the garage in the first place. I'm only hoping that their assholes never close up after the people in the minivan and other car see that the accident has the potential to be caused intentionally for pride and profit, and lawyer up with attorneys armed with telephone poles wrapped in barbed wire.

I'm really starting to think that American life was better before the internet.

Seeing that stupid asshole bounce his face off the dash made my day. I missed that in the original video. Thank you for sharing!!
