A long time ago, the Ball brothers made carburetors. Eventually their operation got absorbed by Carter, and the name remained for many decades. First paragraph here.
(when I was first starting out in the hobby, I thought they were called ball & ball carburetors because each carburetor has two check balls in the accelerator pump system!)
