1972 Scamp "Smokey" - Saved From Wildfire

QA1 DS showed up today. Weighs 13.4lbs with the 1350 yoke. Machine work on the end caps is excellent. Really excited to finally own one of these.

Got a surprise knock on my door yesterday evening. Hood showed up! I have a few other tasks ahead of this, but at first blush it looks pretty good. SO much lighter than the stock hood.

Getting pretty close to taking her out. Been really busy buttoning-up the last remaining to dos. I ended up going with a remote oil filter. Adapter is from Canton and the housing is from Kartek. Super nice piece. They were the only holder that I could find to fit a WIX 51222R filter. I was able to mount it just behind the strut bar. It's pretty low to keep from dry starts. The QA1 bracket is a nice guard for it too.

I had to swap out the headers also. Not sure if you guys noticed in the video I posted, but there was a loud knocking sound. That was the #3 and #5 primary tubes hitting the steering box. I called TTI up and, unbelievably, they had a set of 1-7/8" in stock. I got the X-pipe too. Everything fit awesome. I had to shim the motor up 3/16" to clear the torsion bar. Aside from that, it was went together fairly easily.

Just need waiting on the last muffler to show up and then we'll be very close to taking it on the road

Remaining muffler went MIA in the mail, so I had to reorder another one. What a pain. Gave me a chance to focus on some other tasks. The X-pipe and hangars did show up and it fit very well.

Got my external oil filter all plumbed and insulated. Even with the TTI headers, it was super tight. All fit together really well, but very time consuming when you've got big hands. Used 10an lines. Made it so the filter is lower to prevent dry starts. That 51222R filter held 1.5qts of oil. Insane!

Also, that Ford video where they guy lost his brakes and wrecked, made me realize I needed to install my Parking Brake. So that's done. New cables and fittings. Very smooth now.

I also got the interior in. I still have to loom the wires and hide them, but it's all back together. It is actually very comfortable in there with the new seats.

Left to Do:

- Get alignment
- Bleed brakes (again)
- Wire the alternator

We close. Hopefully driving by next weekend

Any new updates?

Sorry guys...I broke the unwritten rule and dead-ended my own build thread. I ended up getting a B-body in May and it's been taking up a lot of my time.

Gosh, where to begin....So the 421 in the Scamp got yanked this past Spring and I did some milling and port work on the heads and got a larger cam. My C/R is now at 12:1. I also ditched that Brawler carb for a custom 950 from IRD and installed a new dual AFR guage by the shifter. She drives great. Pulls very hard after 3800rpm all the way up to 6800. The combination really woke it up - and it wasn't a slouch beforehand, so it should rip.

Next step is it's getting a 10 point cage installed. My kit from S&W just showed up earlier this week and I'll be dropping the car off at my fab shop (hopefully) next week. Should take about a month or so and then I have to get everything certified.

Here are some rando pics I've taken of the progress. I'll be sure to keep this thread updated as next year's racing season approaches. Really looking forward to making some NA and nitrous passes. Targeting high 9s. I weighed the car again with the cage inside of the cab, and it came in at 3043lb. I need it about 200lbs less to compensate for my fat *** :lol:

It's been challenging splitting time between this car and my 63'. Something always gets neglected. I'll do better about keeping this thread updated moving forward. Cool stuff is on the horizon!

I spent a lot of time researching and tediously choosing my parts to keep the weight down. It's a "street" car so I didn't want to cut it up, so the weight reduction had to come from the sum of its components. I'm proud to say I never used a hole saw once on this car.

The hood and bumpers are the only fiberglass pieces. Everything else is aluminum or carbon fiber. The cage is chromoly. It still has leaf springs and torsion bars.

Lots of room for chassis mods and more weight reduction. Which will hopefully come after next season.

Nice, I didn't realize you had fiberglass bumpers, I have a pair but need to install them, I also added a lift off hood. With the steel hood/bumpers and the mild steel 10 point cage mine weighed 3270 without me. I need to scale it now with the race hood then again with the fiberglass bumpers installed and heater core removed (I never use the heater) to see where it lands. I am keeping my heavy *** electric bmw sport seats though, they are too nice too get rid of lol.
 
Nice work! That's a beautiful car and I usually ain't fond of silvers or greys.

I totally hear you on the seats. Some creature comforts are needed. My Procar seats are heavy as all get-out but they're so damn comfortable. They are 43lbs each with the slider bracket. I have a Kirkey seat that will tie into the cage and l'll use that at the track. There's another -70lbs I can save.

Nice job!, no wonder I was fooled, it looks fantastic. I was looking at that product before and haven't decided if I want it, satin/aluminum or body color, decisions, decisions!.
 
Mrs. Santa got me a really awesome present this Christmas. I love this woman! I've been wanting to go to a 17" front wheel for a few years. I'm going to send the rears to Mac Fab for beadlocks after it comes back from getting the cage.

I have to lower it about 1.5". It's hard to tell from the photo but the nose is sticking up like an aristocrat.

And of course I had to weigh them. Haha. The tires are about as heavy as the wheels. They're about 4lbs more each than the 15" Win Lites.

Cage is finally going in! It's a 10-point CM from S&W and we're adding a bunch of extra bracing. The sketch shows the layout that my fab guy sent me. I'm likely moving to a ladder bar setup after this season, so we're going to reinforce the trunk floor direcyly above where the coilovers will be mounted.

My chassis guy is crushing it. He's getting everything super tight, but with just enough space so I can remove the dash.
