Something followed me home..

So, lets check back in on this situation. The 318 has ran perfectly all year and even got around 15 mpg all summer long BUT....it's time to get the 360 going and back in. Under inspection the thrust bearing was tore up allowing the crank to move around so, I'm positive this was the vibration in the engine. Pulled it apart and put new bearings, rings, oil pump, timing chain. Upgraded the cam, bought a Speedmaster air gap intake for it also, picked up some Magnum heads to put on it. Short block is done I just need to finish getting the heads ready to go on. Hopefully this "off season" I can get the 360 back in, sub frame connectors on and do something with the leaf springs. I also scored a decent dual snorkel air cleaner to put on it. A buddy of mine blasted it so, yesterday I painted it up and put a new decal on. Before I get beat up over it...yes, I know ..not the correct style air cleaner and, I'm fully aware the decal is for a 74 360 car but, I like it better than the 75 decal.

Nice glad to see your back I got a 74 360 sport now. Yours is close toy twin. I didn't realize magnum heads were an option how much of a difference are the valves may have to check that out.

I believe I was reading your thread the other day about your car. There are a lot of differing opinions on the Magnum heads but, from what I have read they flow pretty good for a cast head. They definitely flow better than the smog heads that were on it. When using them you either have to buy an intake drilled for Magnum heads or drill your current intake as the intake bolts go straight down like a Ford instead of at an angle like LA heads. You also have to measure for new pushrods as the rockers are pedalstal mounted and a different length is needed.

Well...heads are done and on. Measured for pushrods and, ordered them and a wieghted flexplate so I can use the neutral balanced stall converter I have. Brought the car home tonight and threw the air cleaner on it just for effect..lol

Engine is done and ready to go in. Pulled the other engine out last night. Might try and get the new one set down in there this weekend..Hell, maybe even fire it up.

Well...got it in and fired up. It runs like hot garbage!! A quick spray of brake cleaner around the intake confirmed my suspicion that the intake didn't seal for ****. Ran it long enough to break in the cam so, now I will rip off the intake and reseal that. Sometimes I swear this car hates me...lol

NICE BUILD. The rear tires and wheels don't look right to me. Looks like too much backspacing and or the tires are way too small. The rear tires look smaller than the front.

Originally they were smaller as it had some small little drag radials on it.

Under further investigation it wiped out the cam shaft during the break in???? I have never had one fail. I pulled the I take off to find a couple lifters concave on the bottom and a couple collapsed. Looks like it had an oiling issue to the camshaft during the break in. Too cold and I'm too pissed off to tear it back apart right now so I'm giving it a few days before I diagnose what happened. Before I get too much advise I will answer the most common questions before you ask. Yes, it had oil with zinc in it. Yes, I primed the oil pump before it was started. Yes, since it has magnum heads I have the oil through push rods and, lifters with oil provisions for the push rod oiling.

Ive done 2 Magnum head to LA block conversions and both went better than expected. One in a 3/4 ton '83 D250 on its original 318, and the other on an 89 Ramcharger that we built a 408 out of a 76 360 and dropped in

Well that sucks. Given the quality of parts available today, the odds of a successful break in are much less than just a decade ago. Time for a G3 hemi swap.

Example 258,000 on why this car hates me.
Pulled the motor out and seemed to be an oil pump failure so, block got hot tanked, new bearings (again), new cam and lifters (again), new oil pump (again)...

Example 258,001 on why this car hates me.
Fired the re-re-refreshened engine and......(insert drum roll here).....sounds strong for about 20 seconds and...locks up....(ARE YOU F$#%ING KIDDING ME!!!!) Readers digest version is it spun #8 rod bearing!! SWEET!!!
Since cruising season is coming quickly the 318 that was in it last year is going back in but, with the cam, intake, heads from the 360. I suppose I will take a breather from the terrible time I have had with this engine and possibly buy a 408 kit for and start over. I really get a feeling this car wanted to just rot into the ground but, I had to save it so, it's punishing me...318 ready to go back in..hopefully running this weekend so I can get other things accomplished.

Wow, ummm, frustrating or what, holy cow! You have a lot more patience than I do.

I hear you brother! In the same the same boat as you.

It's been a bit since I have checked in here. We will pick up where I left off. The 318 went back in and, during the cam break in it blew both head gaskets. I removed the magnum heads and put some 302 casting heads on it. Engine ran fine for a few hundred miles and then, it had some top end issues. During this time I bought a new crank for the 360 along with another oil pump, camshaft and gaskets. I had the magnum heads magnafluxed and they took a little off to make them perfectly flat. I put it all back together again and it's running good now but, I must have smacked the convertor pretty good or akward while putting the engine and now it's pumping tranny fluid out of the front real bad...OF COURSE IT IS!!! So out comes the trans to fix that...

I got around to painting my cop car wheels and these will be going on this week also.

Awesome! What was your home made booth setup like? You run a fan and filters through the plastic or did you just hang plastic around the garage and spray?
I clean for like a week, hang plastic on walls ceiling. I have a exhaust fan from a factory ceiling exhaust that has been built in to a wooden box. It goes in the the garage door(big door) that is closed off with plastic. I cut a hole in the plastic to fit the fan into. It works great!! You can see the fan in this picture. The door way is covered in plastic and I cut a hole for the fan then, just staple the plastic to the fan.
