71 Power Gear Box Removal

I have read the instructions in the 71 Plymouth Chassis Service Manual and it is pretty straight forward. Remove steering column, remove hoses, remove arm, remove bolts, remove gear assembly.

I have a 71 Demon with a 318 and manifolds...(probably not stock to 71). Anyways, I was looking at this and I'm wondering, do you remove the gear box from the top or drop it out the bottom. It looks fairly tight either way. There was a post I found in the archives where it was suggested to remove the motor mount and jack the engine up but that may have been with headers. Not a big deal for me either way but just wondering what to expect as the service manual seems a little light in this area.
A lot depends on the configuration of your engine compartment so the manual would not address those differences. I had to jack up the engine a couple of inches to get mine out through the top. Also, you don't need to actually remove the column, just unbolt it from the firewall & under dash mounting points and after removing the roll pin from the gearbox attachment pull gently to disengage it from the gearbox. Mine was stuck on the gearbox so I used a large flat head screwdriver to pry the coupler off of the gearbox shaft. Not a big deal to remove, just take your time.
