Mitutoyo Dial Indicator

I must be dense but I can't figure out how this dial indicator fastens to a stand. I'm used to the type with the lug on the back and this style doesn't seem to have that. ????

That's just the indicator and you can't see the back. You need all the attachment accessories. That's only a .060 range. Maybe good for ring gear backlash or axle end play but that's about it. Check out this one with the mounting accessories. Mitutoyo 513-403-10T Dial Test Indicator, .008" Range, .0001" Graduation 4946368676326 | eBay

It used the wee dovetail at the top of the spine, kinda like scope rings on a rifle. You can see the clamp at bottom right of this picture

And fyi, 99% of those measuring tools on eBay are Chinese counterfeit trash.

Spend the money, buy from an approved retailer or distributor. You'll be glad you did.

Dove tailed test indicator, not really what you want for engine/automotive assembly.

Are you looking for this type, not the brand?

I was just gonna ask if anybody’s has use this, if this is what you’re looking for?

Yeah, I agree with others, you probably want a true dial indicator. That one is a test indicator that you might mount in a mill and run a 360* sweep to indicate that the machine is set up square to the bed.

Thanks guys, I had never seen that mounting style before. What I was looking for was a dial that I could use on the ID of a small bore to determine if I have it chucked up concentrically. And thanks for the heads up on the counterfeit Chinese equipment.

I had a small back plunger Starrett dial indicator set which would work for what you are trying to do. It has a long teeter-totter thingy to reach into a small bore & transfer the movement via the teeter tottering to the back plunger indicator.

And it can also use the dovetail on the back.

For what you say you want to do with it, that should work. Wish I was home I could post a pic of the accessories I have for mine.
It's basically a piece that slides over the dovetail that screws in to a 3/8 cylinder that can mount in a chuck, and tightens onto the dovetail where you want.
Can work in a mill or drill press.
The little lever can go + or -.

If that’s what you are doing that’s the indicator you want.

r.
Ahhh! a dial bore gauge! Yeah, those are super handy to map out cylinder walls.

I have a few test indicators but honestly I use my Brown & Sharpe 599-7739-3 more often & I would recommend one for most automotive guys..

BTW the pictures are from the internet so the number on the box is the Starret version of the tool....

After looking at your link, I've seen a 1/2 dozen, at least, online that are just a fraction of the price of the one you were looking at. Not that price is an absolutely positive indication(no pun intended) of quality.
I've had good luck buying good used precision machinist tools on ebay. Names like Starrett, Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe, etc for decent prices.
