Greetings all,
I know that when I was trying to answer that all too important question: “Stock or +1”” when ordering Espo leaf springs, I wanted more and more photos.

I’m here to give back a little. I just installed 6-leaf +1” springs on my ‘64 convertible GT. I think they turned out great. Ride is much better.

The ones I replaced, I’m pretty darn sure we’re original.

Now front suspension…

Happy wrenching,
Greg

That rake is perfect for the lines of that car. It looks great!

Thanks Rusty.

One thing to add for those looking for reference photos… 14” wheels up front, 15” in the back.

That looks perfect. It has just a little rake that looks great on these cars. ESPO is a great place with friendly staff and reasonable prices. We have sold hundreds of sets for them here on FABO.

How does one determine what stock height is, with cars being 50 plus years old, the heights are all over the place.

Look for original pics on the inter web.
Look up your particular car, and hit "images".

I have a picture of a Cuda I owned in the late seventies, unfortunately, it had air shocks on it and I honestly don't know where it sat unassisted. However, in this picture, it seems to sit about the height I am used to seeing for E-bodies.

Here’s my 70 Challenger SE with original springs.

I think the book "How to Make Your Car Handle" by Fred H Puhn, had a list of ride heights related to ground clearance. Generally the factory stance was level. New springs will settle a bit over the first 1,000 miles or so. Going to a 1" larger diameter wheel on the back with the tire width and aspect ratio the same will raise the back about 1/2".

If you look at pics from original cars rolling off the showroom floor they where lower than expected or often seen now.
I remember buying Several Unmolested, running and driving cars (for a few hundred bucks each) in the late 89s and early 90s. YOU ARE correct Sir

I have considered changing the stock "sport" leaf srpings on my barracuda, they are pretty stiff on rogh roads. Just rebent them to their original arch when I got the car and have been there since. I considered the hotchkis 2-leaf spring, but do not like the idea of lowering it. I want stock height and good performance.

Give it some time, they will loosen up. Be sure to loosen the rear shackle nuts, put the car on the ground and then tighten to specs. Often need to repeat that process after a few thousand miles. You are avoiding having the rubber bushings loaded/twisted leading to premature failure.
