Engine install from below?

Back when son was doing Fiero engine swaps we did the bottom in & out every time. Seems kind of intimidating at first, but boy is it easy when you get the hang of it. Built the whole thing on wood cart with Harbor freight casters & rolled it in and out. Nothing easier than assembling everything out in the open & dropping the car down on it. Didn’t have a lift. Used a harbor freight engine hoist, 4x4s & jack stands. Always want to have two independent supports.

I thought you meant from like Australia or something dude...............

Yup, a couple beefed up Harbor Freight dollies is all you need.

I used HF dollies as well but mine didnt roll very easily and came out a little worse for wear. I will use heavier castors next time

My way will be a little different. I mate the motor, tranny, and Kmember together and raise the car up high enough for the 2 post lift to let me guestimate the motor position and set it on the floor. I then lower the body down until I can reach the lift point on the motor through the top and lift it into place. Once I get the K member bolts in it's a simple strap on the radiator support taut on the motor.

Raise the car up and put stands under car, tranny etc..... I don't worry about the front end assembly. But I have the 2 post lift so it's just as easy for me to assemble everything at eye level. That's what works for me and as usual mileage may vary lol....

Old thread but where did u get those straps. Getting ready to put engine and trans in and I need to do from the bottom..I can't believe the way you have the straps it held no problem?
Just a pair of tie-down axle straps, I think I got them at Jegs, like 20 years ago.

So easy it is and no special jigs needed per say. I did have my nephew who never welded in his life build me a bolt on jig for the US car tools body wheels. I built my jig with simple wood from the HD store and was so easy! Cost was negligible for easy install. Allowed me to build up the K and suspension together while waiting on the body.

That is an awesome cart. I would like to build something like that as I have some heavy caster laying around from an old huge drill press cart I have. By chance would you have the dimensions of the cart?

Totally adjustable for angle and fits all engines. Also K- member fastens to it for assembly. Then you can install the engine . There is a hole located on the pan rail to hold the block. Then you install the trans. The whole assembly is built on the stand . Rolls easy and also can be lifted with a fork lift.

That's how I always do mine. Like the factory

Cart and engine hoist worked great for me. Lifted right off the front bumper there isn't much weight up front when it's bare. This thread was paramount to my decision of installing this way. Works great give it a go I won't go in from the top ever again!!
