Some of you may have seen the thread where I was building a 440 for my RamCharger, and swapping in a 4 speed at the same time.
Well after I got it all together and presentable, I realized pretty quickly that the NP435 that I bought used off of failbook, was total junk. It’s the absolute worst transmission I’ve ever attempted to drive. So instead of rebuilding it or buying another used one, I spent way too much money on this

Tremec TR4050 5 speed. Fully synchronized and 650 lb-ft capacity. I also opted for the short throw shifter.
Gear ratios are, (6.16) (3.11) (1.71) (1:1) (.76) (R 6.03)
There’s only one bell housing that will work for this transmission and the Mopar big block (Lakewood #15335) and you have to get the long input shaft in the transmission for it to work. It has the same bell housing bolt pattern as a NV4500.

I got it from Silver Sport Transmissions. They were completely out of these for a few months because of supply chain issues. The day they got some in, they swapped out the input shaft and shifter, and got it on a pallet on its way to my door.
Somewhere along the line of transport, a careless F’wad impaled the box with a fork lift. The clutch kit that was included sacrificed its own life to save the transmission. SST sent another clutch out same day.

Can’t wait to get it back together and row through the gears!

Very cool, Craig! Caint wait to see it!

Wow! I didn’t know you could get those off road crawl first gears in those units.

That truck is cool. Yeah new OD trans is big bucks but will transform the vehicle and you can get some of that money back with better gas mileage.

Keep us updated on how it goes. I was looking at that transmission for my ‘74 W200 but they don’t make a 2 wheel drive version of that trans, only married setups. I’d have to change the whole underside of the truck to swap from a divorced transfer case setup. I’m not doing that.

Beautiful piece! Should serve you well indeed!

They do make a 2wd variant now. It hasn’t been out long

Test fitting the new trans and bell for tunnel and cross member modifications. So far it looks like all I need to do is cut a new shifter hole, and slide the factory cross member back a couple of inches.
The cross member is held on with 3 evenly spaced bolts that go along the frame on each side, top and bottom. I slid the cross member back the distance of 1 bolt and it looks like everything is going to line up perfectly.
Luckily my floor pans are rusted out (never thought I’d say that) so I could get the upper cross member bolts out without lifting the cab from the frame.
I already have new floor pans waiting to go in once I get this done.

New floor pans installed, had to expand one small section of the tunnel too. SST sent me the wrong pilot bearing and throw out bearing, and I’m usually too busy to call them. Amazingly I found what I needed at Oreillys! If I can get off work before it gets dark tomorrow, the drivetrain is going back in for good.
Grinders and paint make you the welder you ain’t!
