I feel your heartache. We had to put down our Rat Terrier in July. We adopted him from the animal shelter in February 2008. He was said to be 7 years old when we adopted him. If my math is right, he would have been around 20 years old. Hardest thing to do, and still tear up when I think of the little guy.
