Traditionally this is what I would expect the engine compartment to look like.
This is 67 or later but they were very much the same
Post some more photos of the Alternator mounting , very curious!
Typically where your alternator is is where the Power Steering pump would mount.
Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with it's current mounting location
You could also look for casting numbers on the intake might shed some light.
