This was an unusual way for a hose to collapse and fail. I'd bet that 99% of the time when the hose collapses the wheel cylinders will not retract after applying the brakes. The pedal/master cylinder can supply a heck of a lot more psi than the shoe return springs. Being unable to apply pressure to the cylinders is a very unusual failure.
If thats what really happened we are talking about story telling tony here...:)
