heat sensor in air cleaner

Hi,
Im going to be replacing my air cleaner assembly for one without the snout. My question is regarding the heat sensor in the bottom of the air current air cleaner. One tube runs from the snout of the air cleaner and the other to the carb - do I just cap off the port at the carb when I switch over? Will there be any driveability issues doing this or is it just for cold weather/engine startups?
Its on a '74 318, stock motor, carter car if any of that makes a difference
Thanks
