Sunday Morning Coffee with the Old Farts

If you prefer a smaller population with lots of special-interest cars, you should visit Lake Havasu. There are at least 20-30 rods/collector/kit cars in my neighbor hood. Sitting on our porch on a weekend is like watching a car show, or, the beginning of an off-road race since the street alongside our house goes directly into the desert two blocks down. On any day you can see a very nice Ford GT kit car, Cobra, Blown Willys street gasser, a couple of really nice Nomads, several Rat-Rods, various ’30’s street rods, and my favorite: a ‘66 Chevelle four-door sedan converted to a convertible. It has two small-blocks in the engine compartment, is painted in quasi-Air Force silver hammer-tone colors, sixteen exhaust pipes exiting under the fenders… and an inflatable porno doll “manning‘ a replica of a .50 cal machine gun in the back seat. The owner built it all himself in his garage down the street. The workmanship is amazing. My across-the-street neighbor has a beautiful all-metal ‘36 Ford convertible stashed in his garage. Thursday night is cruise night on McCulloch Blvd (our Main Street) and it could compete with many local car shows. Lots of old school So-Cal hot-rodders have retired here. We have a couple of big car events every year that draw cars from all over.
