Skyscrapers are the product of high land prices, limited real estate, the elevator, and human desire.
Yes, you are stating the obvious, but in NYC I suspect the "desire" was inspired somewhat by "manure", which conveniently seems to be whitewashed from the history books.
On elevators, they were a solution for skyscrapers, skyscrapers were not a solution for elevators is my guess.
