72 Demon steering column (floor shift)

Putting my steering column back together and looking for some help. The column is for a 72 Demon with floor shifter. My question is, should this column have the wave washer? I don't believe the original came with the wave washer but there seemed to be too much play for the key release piece and it felt sloppy. I them tried installing a wave washer and the key release feels tight and does not return easily.
