I put all my nuts & bolts in a plastic mayonnaise jar with mineral spirits, broken glass, a few short drywall screws & other scraps and leave them in a rock tumbler for a few days. Sometimes have to put more stuff in there so the jar doesn't just spin around while the stuff sits still. I added a few bent pieces of sheet metal to help "stir" things up. Come out almost new looking. Might then need a 2nd go-round with either paint stripper, spirits again, or phosphoric acid depending on what ails you.
ALSO- If you use broken glass, give everything a second go but without any glass to get all the little glass grit out of the threads. I mated another nut or bolt to everything before and after to be sure.

Its also good for mixing natural Peanut Butter. Stab a few holes down through the settled stuff so the oil can get down there, and let it turn overnight.
I run spray paint cans on there too.
