And those cars are gentleman raced now. So a lighter, shaved down, tweaked out block isn't a big deal to them. Reliability for lesser cost, safety, and breakage is more important.

I also doubt they are pumping those motors to measure cubic inches.. so if they ran a larger 340 at a lower rpm and similar HP that would save them money.

They are raced by Gentleman, but most of them are pushed very hard and get beat to ****. Last year F1 cars around Laguna were 1:18. The motors have to be build to the CC specs of back in the day. 305 was the rule then it is the rule now. Yes some want hot rod motors and some want plain Jane. Rebuilding a TA V8 by the main guy in the Bay Area is about 15-20 grand. They don’t really detune the motors. There are times mainly in SCCA that a motor will be contested and torn down. Not so much in the vintage, but it can happen.

I’m not saying that these were not used in the CamAm cars, but as noted the DN4 was already a 3 or so year old car by the time it was raced in 77 by Phoenix. The spec changed a lot over the years and to keep cost low they could have changed the rules for later. it was not like F1 where 3 liters was the rule from 66-85 with turbos limited to 1600cc.
