72 360, cam/lifter failure, replacements?
I just spent a couple hours in an archaeological dig in the garage looking for car parts. There was a time I was planning to rebuild the 360 LA before I switched plans to swap a 5.9 magnum. All those parts mixed with Slant six turbo parts, and 5.7 hemi parts. I am doing an inventory and rediscovering parts I forgot about. Over the last 3 1/2 years I had kidney failure and another kidney transplant. My mind was occupied just trying to stay alive and keep my job and I forgot a lot of stuff. That combined with the great hemi car parts theft that happened before I became ill. I lost all my 5.7 hemi parts including computer and harness, the only thing they did not take was the 5.7 engine. Near as I can tell they did not touch any LA/Magnum parts, even shiny stuff like intake manifolds.
JunkYardHero, as for what type of setup, it was a bone stock 72 360 that I swapped a four barrel dual plane intake (Edelbrock RPM if memory serves) with a 600 cfm vac secondary carb. it ran really well. I ran it for over a year with that combo before the flat cam/lifter fiasco. I run an HEI distributor and it has worked flawlessly. Stock exhaust manifolds into a single pipe. I have headers for it that never made it on before this all happened. I was collecting parts for dual pipes but again did not get that far. This was my daily driver for part of Covid. Prior to swapping the intake manifold I drove it for a couple years for Wrecking yard trips, parts running, and camping trips.
JunkYardHero, I agree, time to do a tear down. Since, the magnum swap has fallen by the wayside and I have much of my health back it is time to start tearing into it. Tomorrow I will either start tearing it down or dig further into the garage car parts mess. Maybe both!
Mopar Head I scored a set of used EQ heads (I think they are the good ones) when I bought a used 5.9 magnum from a wrecking yard. Unfortunately the heads were the only good things on that engine. These may be a swap option. I do have a magnum edelbrock dual plane 4bbl intake I can use. This could save some money on valve seats and valve job.
