Advice on buying junkyard engines?

Cars in a pay and pull yard are called "End of life cars." Cars that were used up till nothing was left. Once in a while you'll see a nice clean car that was a good runner but was rear ended or T boned- But many cars in those yards were driven by single moms or a Johnny the grand son and they drove the $#! out of them and never added oil and ignored engine lights.
