IT WILL NOT START

When you dropped the steering did you inadvertently allow the ignition lock wiring to come loose.

on mine it runs from column up to the main in car loom, clamped into the dash box
53 years old loom, no give, no flex the wrapping has been "baked by the sun" in there.

sounds like you have power to the stater in the start position.
but a problem with power to the coil either in Start or RUN

does the accessory power work ie dash lights radio etc?

You are suffering similar to what i did on the day i disconnected my ignition lock wires and then in the darkness of a "head in the footwell" situation realized that it had been repaired with all 4 wires the same colour., and that it should have 1 single connector not 4 individual bullets. A good few combinations tried before all wires back in the right place; Of course the switch isn't labelled, they expect you to use the colours of the switch wires. so even though easy to ID 12 Volt wire to go into switch which connector wire on the switch should it be on...etc repeat for the other 3 wires.
