Convertible top latch question -- How to replace a torsion spring?

You can see the spring in place on the top photo in my post. The one on the left side of the latch.

But oh, hey, I'm going to try your method! Never dawned on my to go half way on the top like that. I think if I can get the latch assembly out, I can figure out something with that spring. Or possibly buy an entirely new assembly (don't want to do that with cheapy stuff if I don't have to.)
