Check your starter to see if it has a bushing in the top bolt hole. If it doesn't, the starter might be cockeyed towards the flywheel too much. The bottom hole of the starter will be a nice "barely fits" size on the stud. The stud goes on the bottom, so don't move it. Just loosen the starter bottom nut and the to bolt, then see if it moves back and forth on the top bolt. I don't know if you can buy one of those bushings if it is missing, but any machine shop should be able to make you one. I hope that fixes it.
