I give up. No more advice from me. In a short period of time:
Item 1: A good friend wanted to buy an OBS Ford truck, and since I had three of them at the time (I sold one this past weekend), he asked me for some advice. Said advice included what to look (and look out) for, where in the country to purchase a clean, rust free truck, geographically speaking, how to go about doing a long distance purchase, yadda, yadda. Well, he found a truck in Oregon, but he didn't listen to me, and now all of the problems regarding the bad title and dishonest transport company are my fault (I won't go into the details).
Item 2: A family friend has a son who recently bought a "fixer upper" home, and since he's a handyman by trade it's seems to be a good fit for him. But he doesn't know HVAC, so at the request of my wife I went over there and spent over an hour walking him through the ins and outs of furnace sizing, duct sizing, A/C sizing, etc, etc. But again- Did he listen? Nope! Damn fool kid bought a furnace that has twice the airflow capacity that the house needs ("...it was a great deal..."), he didn't upsize the ductwork before finishing the basement ceiling like I told him to, and now that it's noisy, this is somehow my fault.
Item 3: One of our Service Techs at work burned-up a $2,000 VFD (variable frequency drive) because he didn't follow the settings and parameters I sent to him. I have only 30+ years experience working with them, so what do I know? Anyway, since he's one of the Golden Haired Boys around here, his failure to follow my step-by-step instructions is somehow, again, my fault.
I just told my boss I will not be providing Tech Support to his guys any longer, nor am I going to offer any opinions and/or advice to anyone- family or friends. I quit, and from now on, to the maximum extent possible, I'm going to adhere to JRR Tolkien's words (from The Fellowship of the Ring):“For advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill."
