An Apparent Lack of Pins

I've seen missing pins replaced with #10?- #12? (pin size) Machine screws from the back with the nut run down.
I have repaired separated pins by using a slightly spread cotter pin from the back, - up inside the pin-shell, to hold it in place - then re-solder pin to circuit board.
