New lift.

I don't know about other brands, but my Benpak has a series of locks it goes through on the way up. At full up, I listen for the mechanical lock falling into place( it's loud and easy to hear) and then lower it about 3 inches onto the locks. It will NOT go down until you raise it 3 inches, and pull on the cable releases all the way down. With the locks engaged, it will not go down if there's a hydraulic failure. Come to think of it, I guess the car is stuck up there until the hydraulics are restored to working condition. A well engineered product.
Mine is a John Bean 12k, and also has the same locking mechanism. While I could raise a vehicle and stop between the locks without engaging them, I absolutely will not. No way, no how. It's just not worth risking my life or anyone ele's.
