489 Case Crush Sleeve Question

Is there a way to tell if the crush sleeve has been eliminated without taking the pinion out to see what is behind it? I have a couple of 489 cases on the shelf that were new built/ rebuilt for me over the years, but I do not remember if the elimination was done by the builder, and he has passed away. I want to change the yoke size on one of them, but dont really want to open one up and lose the preload setting on the pinion if it still has the crush sleeve.
