Mini starter for a 74 duster slant 6 225

A mini starter will fit any engine that uses the 62-87 Chrysler gear reduction starter. They do not interchange with the older direct-drive starter found on certain manual trans applications. I feel like these starters work fine but are not an actual upgrade from the last of the OG Chrysler-built starters. The large-frame 1.8hp Chrysler-built starter likely spins the engine as fast as the mini-starter.

Where you will see a dramatic improvement is over the early '62-mid '69 2095150 Chrysler-built unit, which is built with a shunt coil in it to limit the rpm of the electric motor. Also, Chrysler evidently agreed with most of the backyard mechanics in that a faster turning starter motor helped mask a poorly tuned, reluctant to start engine. Just about all of Chrysler's mid-70's and later engines were poorly tuned and reluctant to start, so after mid-'73 they replaced the shunt coil with a regular coil to speed the starter up, plus introducing the aforementioned 1.8hp starter. Regards.
