I have some friends whos facial hair makes lip reading impossible. I'm far from "deaf" but it sure does help in some situations.
Believe it or not, everyone lipreads. That's what the audiologist at Toronto Sick Kids told us when we had Jen tested at 2 years old. When they fitted her with hearing aids we took her home and at bedtime she didn't want us to take them out. We did when she got to sleep.
Some kids have flushed them down the toilet or threw them in the garbage and some pets have chewed them. Jen loved them but eventually went to using only one aid in her best ear. She said it caused too much interference. She's now 51 and does so well in either the deaf or hearing world. My wife had quit her job as a RN and worked with her and it's paid off umpteen times over.
