I dislike the hypocrisy and judgemental attitude that I have found in so many different churches.
My wife and I were attending this one church and had been for some time. We were contributing to the collection plate regularly and we enjoyed the messages from the pastor. Until one day when he was on a rant about people who were living together but not married. Well, what the hell business is that of anyone else?
We were never asked about our marital status whenever we made our donation to the collection!
Now suddenly we were told that he would refuse to perform any wedding ceremony for anyone who was living together but unmarried, unless the couple lived apart for a minimum of 6 months, and it had to be verified!
That was the very last time I was in any church. I don't need to go to any specific place to make my own peace with my God, nor will I ever allow any person to judge me for my own life decisions.
Sounds like the same double standard our church had.
When my first wife abandoned the kids and I, the church said that they did not recognize divorces and we could only remain members if I got a church-sanctioned annulment. When I asked what it would take to get an annulment, I was told "About $500" (at the time, that was a lot more than I had). Really? Nothing else, just a payoff? Or else the kids and I are not welcome? What about the "We welcome everybody with open arms" (or some similar nonsense) proclamation on the sign outside? No, it's not about the people; it's about the money. Haven't been back except for weddings and funerals. I'll find my own peace with my God.
