I saw a want ad and was curious. Would the OD's work in a B body? You know, that shifter mounting difference.

Hmmm…. I had one but now can’t remember. But I know they have the B/E mount for sure .
I have one in my storage garage but I haven't paid close enough attention to what it looks like though. Next time I'm over there I need to snap some photos and get some numbers.

The 833 OD trans from trucks has a B/E style tail shaft with shifter mounting bosses in both locations. The front mount was used for trucks and is drilled and tapped, the rear mount was not used and is undrilled. The rear mount can easily be drilled and tapped for use in an E-body or whatever would need that shifter location. I have a standard 833 and 833OD on the shelf. The OD was pulled from a 73 Charger that was converted from an automatic. Pretty sure that they bolt right in, no issues with the crossmember.

Yes, A833OD will bolt in to a b-body.
Need an OD shift lever and rod.

If you do the following you can swap back and forth between the regular A833 and the A833OD:
On the OD turn down the bearing retainer from 5.125 to 4.8.
Have/get a bell with the 4.8 hole.
Have/swap a 4.8 bearing retainer to the standard A833, or use a ring on a 4.35 retainer.

My understanding is some truck ODs have a different trans to bell bolt pattern.

On mine, I just flipped the tang on the 3rd/4th gear lever.

...and I can't turn down the retainer as the new OD would be in the bolt holes.

I found an A/F body bell housing with a 5.125 hole and shift fork/pivot.

That may be the chevy version

Nope.

1987 D100

Chevy version has a different bell pattern entirely, like a traditional gm pattern.

There are dual pattern bells, but I think they are gm on the engine side.

IIRC an NP 435 also came in gm trucks.

Flipping it didn't work on my 67 Barracuda.
B-body might, haven't tried on mine, yet.

On my a-body, there was enough space to turn down the bearing retainer from 5.125 to 4.8.

I went round and round with this.

Apparently some are, some aren't.
