Another Tale of resistor bypass woes.
A friend down here, was trying to help his friend figure out why his older Ski Supreme with Commander Marine 351 was running for a while & dying, & then restarting after cool off period. They drove through at least 2 or 3 of the five lakes, and finally did while in the Dora Canal, while idling. Not a good spot to breakdown.
They then figured out the coil got hot, so his friend ordered one and he installed it & it still happened, so my friend got a call when he was at my place. They then told me it was hooked to 12 volts & I immediately asked if it was a resistor coil, and the response was it's marked as a 12 volt coil(system), and gave me blank stares when I said there has to be a resistor somewhere.
A quick look on the internet showed it did require a separate resistor, of course, and looking near the starter for the bypass the owner found a cut wire. Surprise!
Once again a previous owner had a problem & just removed the resistor due to lack of knowledge. New owner now searching for diagram & new resistor. I never asked if the points showed any damage. If so, I'd dress them with Diamond Deb File and keep an eye on them to see if Conderser OK, if no heat damage otherwise.
