This extremely rare deep sea family consists of only two species, both in the genus
Gigantura. They are predatory, growing up to 8 inches (20 cm) and their large, bizarre eyes are highly adapted to spotting prey in the deep waters they inhabit. Additionally, their jaws and stomachs can extend to the point that allows them to eat prey even larger than themselves.
