I am needing to find out what size fitings are needed for the trans cooler lines.

518s use 3/8, so that is what I am upgrading to in the Dart. My B&M cooler has 1/2 NPT female, but I don't know what threads in the case of a 518 or what I need for the transmission radiator tank cooler.

Am I correct in assuming that if I'm running 3/8 aluminum line, I need -6 AN fittings on the line side?

Sorry for the dumb questions, but I've never been good at all this stuff.

I asked the same dumb question, so your not alone. AN sizes are derived from the size of the line. A 3/8' tranmission cooler line would be -6.

Hose Size is the measurement of the Inner Diameter of the hose measured in units of 1/16th of an inch.Examples:a -2 hose has an I.D. of 1/8"a -3 hose has an I.D. of 3/16"a -4 hose has an I.D. of 1/4"a -5 hose has an I.D. of 5/16"a -6 hose has an I.D. of 3/8"a -8 hose has an I.D. of 1/2"a -10 hose has an I.D. of 5/8"a -12 hose has an I.D. of 3/4"a -16 hose has an I.D. of 1"a -20 hose has an I.D. of 1 1/4"

They sell AN adapters that would have 1/2" NPT on one end and 3/8" male AN on the other. Such as the fitting on the left side coming off of the fuel filter in this picture.

BTW: Stillborn fuel pump mount. I decided on a sane sized filter that wouldn't hang too low or get stuffed into an inaccessible area. The Fram is gone... Santa *might* be bringing me a nice Aerospace or BG unit. Or maybe a lump of coal....

There's no dumb questions. And believe me, we all have questions....

FASTBACK340 - that was a great explanation. One simple paragraph..and I "get" it. Just in time for a bunch of work I'm starting in the next week. Thanks for the learnings.

Cool, now i just need to figure out what fitting sizes I need in the radiator (-6 AN to ?? NPT) and in the trans case (-6AN to ??NPT)
