I'm finally getting around to fixing the blown plenum gasket on my Ram... Should be a major pain in the butt, I'm not looking forward this at all. But I'm real tired of the pinging and low (low!) gas milage. I've been using 93 octane gas and getting only about 220-230 miles out of a tank of gas all winter long. That sucks.

I'll be preparing for doing it this weekend by

Good luck on the job at hand, But what's wrong with 220-230 miles per tank? I'm lucky if I can get 200mpt.
even less when I leave the hubs locked.

U should look into an m1 swap for your truck, fixes the prob. an u gain a ton of mid rannge power,i replaced two gaskets on the old crap an got tired of it,look into an M1 there great an u never hav to worry about changing it out agin

Don't you lose low-end with the M1? I tow a lot, I'd rather have the grunt down low...

Mopower71 - before I started having problems, I was getting 300-320 miles per tank.

Yep. It's sucking lots of air. I pulled off one of the breather lines, it almost sucked my finger into it. WAAAAYYYY too much suction going on there. I can hear it when I accelerate, too.

And the pinging is driving me nuts, I can't live with it anymore. Especially with gas going up in the new couple of weeks. It's bad enough I'm paying almost $2.25 per gallon now...

Yup. Thought so.
The F250 and Ram 2500's get 13mpg.
Shoot my 71' RoadRunner got more that that with the 383, 4bbl, 4spd with a 509 cam pulling a 6'x12' u-haul with all my crap packed in it

That sounds about right when I had my 99 quad cab 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 I got about 320 most of the time.

Mikel, Have you ever had the computer reflashed? I was talking to a tech at Chrysler when I first bought my 98 Ram and he told me to wait until I had 1500 on it, then insist on a reflash. My milage whent from 14.5 per gallon to 19 per gallon overnight. And the pinging was gone to.

Nope. But I know the gasket is wasted, it has to be fixed.

there is a updated plenum gasket that is a thicker steel embosed. I used
to work for a dodge dealer out here in cali. did intakes every day. did you get a new bypass hose and thermostat gasket for it. those always leak. Ian

The gasket itself is steel embossed? I picked up the Fel-Pro kit, I was gonna use the gasket from that.

I had all of the radiator hoses changed not too long ago, so they're in good shape. I was thinking about putting in a 180 thermostat at the same time, but I'm not sure if I want to do that. I've heard that it could cause the catalytic converter some grief.

i'd stick w/ 195 it will run better. make sure you torque those under plenum bolts to spec. don't want to have to do it again in a month. i would also do a decarb on the engine w/ that a/c delco stuff x66. it will
help w/ the pinging. its smokes really bad so do it outside not in the garage. Ian

DartGame you mean the GM top engine clean stuff right ? Thats stuff works great.

I haven't used it in along time, it is in a areosol can. I thought its called x66. might have changed the name, but it works great. Ian

Exactly! I've got the TSB, it has the torque specs for all the bolts.

I'm sticking with the thermostat I have now.

I've used that Seafoam stuff in the past with good results. Is the AC Delco stuff any better than Seafoam?

i wish i saw this post sooner, i wish you had gotten the mopar parts instead of fel-pro. a little more but alot better. yes, the new gasket is steel embossed. they also recommend new lower pan bolts. i recommend new intake bolts too asthe become brittle and are prone to break. also, as said too, the bypass and t-stat gaskets always seem to leak after too so change those too. i normally would remember the part numbers but i just started at our dealerships mitsubishi dealer, so my all mopar part# memory bank is slowly being replaced by mitsi numbers :(
