I need advice on this one...

I need a bigger axle. I called my buddy who owns a 4X4 offroad shop. Where he specializes in axles. I asked him for a 8-3/4 and he said he can do a 60 pretty cheap. Mainly because he has them layin around. (Don't forget the buddy discounts too)

So, does a 60 fit in a 71 dart pretty easy as far as the houseing being so large. He'll cut it down to length and what not.

And, what gearing should I go with?

And, is it worth it over an 8-3/4.

from what i have found out the 8 3/4 is usually enough for most anything you do to an a body but the dana 60 is stronger and when built right most say pretty much bulletproof so if you can get a good deal on that one id go with the 60 then there isnt anything you couldnt throw in your dart possibly a blown 600+ ci hemi :mrgreen:

hi, look at his dana selection, if he has a housing from a 1/2 ton ford pickup. this is the lightest of the dana's. it will have regular passenger ends on it.
weight,? about 35# more. also, the 8 3/4 axles will slip into the diff, they;re same spline. just have to change front yoke to mopar. a bolt in setup.
the dana will roll easier.will not slow the car down.

I watched a show on this very topic once. They took a 340 Dart with an
8 3/4 3:91 rearend, ran it down the 1/4 mile 3 times then replaced the 8 3/4 with a Dana 60 4:10 rearend and ran that same car 3 more times down the 1/4 mile. After they compaired the average times from both rearends and there was little to no difference in the performance because the 8 3/4 is lighter and the Dana 60 has a higher gear ratio they pretty much cancelled eachother out. The Dana 60 is pretty much bullet proof, the 8 3/4 is a real strong rearend too but not as strong.

I't really comes down to what you can afford, if your friend can build you a solid Dana 60 for around what it costs for a complete 8 3/4 i say go for the Dana. But if it's going to cost more then you really want to spend go for the 8 3/4 then go for the 8 3/4 since there is no real difference in performance.

Just like everyone said. If you can get a deal on the Dana that's what I would do. I put one in mine, but it was free.

I have a narrowed Dana 60 for sale .... all Strange components, spool, 4.10 gears, lightened backing plates - complete all the way out to the drums. Measures 40" from axle flange to axle flange.

$1000.00 OBO plus shipping from Zip Code 38230.

Getting rid of it because I need a bigger powder coating oven and it's taking up valuable space in my shop. Lots of additional photos are available upon request.

:-D :-D :-D See Chuck? I'm not the CudaChick for nuthin'. LOL!!!!

Figured I'd give ya'll the first crack at the thing since you've been good to me so far. The cash will help me finance the new oven I need so I can start doing your rear ends (hmmmm that sounds a bit sexual), k-members, leaf springs and other big stuff.

No reasonable offer will be refused. (I also just listed a 440, 727 and a steel crank in the Car Parts for Sale forum too, so check it out if you're in the market.)

Quit it now, I already have one redhead getting my fire lit, (my wife) I don't need another one doing it, LOL.

It is definetly a fair price but I have all the rears I need right now (I have a narrowing jig) plus the freight would kill me.

Thanks for the input...

I will tell him to go with the 60 then. Just need to figure out gearing yet.

But it looks like they fit just fine.
