mini-starter

Mines off of a Diplomat with a 318 if I remember right. Too busy looking at the underside of the car at the starter rather than pay attention to what it was really. Think it was an 85 or so. Somewhere in there. Picked it up out of the local self serve auto salvage for $5 or something like that. Cleaned it up, had it tested at the parts store and then bolted it on. Starts the Slant up in a hurry, nice and roomy there now, sort of sounds like a Honda starting up. No problems on install on the '71 Swinger other than moving a clamp that held the positive cable on the inner wing panel over a bit to gain a bit more room to move the cable around at the starter.

Your own preference on new or yard starter. New/rebuilt has the guarantee, is nice and clean and ready to go. Down side is initial price. Used is a matter of finding one which should not be all that hard especially if you have a self serve yard (which I've found to be cheaper). Then it is the gamble of if it is a duffer or a good one. I just looked for the best condition one I could find and found the closest parts store to the yard to have it tested. I got to see it working and stood there to ensure they "accidentally" did not leave off the ground cable while testing (ask me sometime about a few stores that did this). Also got to see the draw on it. Knock on wood been working fine for quite a while now. If you have it tested and it does not work most yards give you a certain period to return it and exchange it for another. No guarantee other than this, but quite a bit cheaper initial cost wise.

Cheers
