My dart vs 1969 Chevelle "396" predictions

-
Even with the good gas they had back in the day, a SS 396 (most were only 325hp) was only a mid 14 to low 15 sec car. I wouldn't worry about it.

There is no point to build a 396 in todays world (other than stock resto) so I wouldn't expect his mods to be much more than standard bolt ons and maybe some home port work.

BUT!!! My best friend has a 71 Chevelle SS, 396 (402ci in 71) with standard bolt ons that DID run 11.70s with a 250-hp NOS shot. Car now has a 502 and runs the same 11.70 without NOS.

So The real answer is ..... Who knows.

Really......... Back in the day the SS 396 was just a nice car with good power. It was the junky 55 Chev with a 12 to 1, 327 that everyone feared.

why is that? he might blow up and send a piston threw his door?=P~ lol chevy and ford suck no matter what combo just look at almost every engine in drag racing all mopars:cheers:

those heads/combo are powerful. a 396 has a short stroke, so it revs up pretty high. a 396 crank is what you put in a 454 to make a 427. a bbc can produce power if done right.

Oh really Pontiac and Chevy have dominated prostock for years...

That style Chevelle can be set up to hook in a sandbox, if the owner knows what to do. It's a poor mans 4 link.

I had the same type car except a 71, in the 80's. Had 12.50 mccreary sprint car tires out back, 4.10, 4K conveter, crane big solid or roller, rect ports, dom or 850, and some juuice. The car would pull the tires on the street. The moose juice and pump to spray the street down helped too! It ran 10.70's with the column shifter. Yee Haw.

Contrary to popular belief, Chevies can run hard. I used to turn mine 7500-8000 on occasion and never blew one up. BBC's do like to eat flat tappet cams!

And I'd place 40 on the little Mopar. The 396 is overrated. I'd be more worried about a smallblock, especially a stroker.

Stroker wouild handle it no problem..his combination i don't know,if theres any work done to the 396,but seeing as he said the other guy is 17 and probably and unexperienced driver,i would say you have the upper hand...

71 318 dart weighs 3270 lbs at least thats what my title says lol

UPDATE:
340srule: who says were racing on the street? yes we are going to the track (infineon or sacramento raceway) nothing is etched in stone we are going later in the month because yeah the track is now open for wed. night drags which is the oppurtunity i have been waiting for but its been rained on for a while and its probably better to let others run their cars for a little while before we run ours. And this is a 17year old kid who has already blew up one motor and i found out today THIS MOTOR IS A 396 BUT ISNT EVEN BROKEN IN, so i have a feeling he is going to back out when it comes down to it and im sure i am the better driver. My Goal is to grab those drag radials put em on and just do my best.
P.S. with Drag Radials do i want to drive around the water or go through it and do a burnout?

I feel very offended. You can't judge a person by their age. Just because someone is young, doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing. Watch out, people constantly surprise one another.

the way i look at is go get the best put together chevy or ford and then put it up against the best combo mopar and everytime you lose mopar wins, i cant even run m1 heads that has 20 year old tech and chevys are aloud to run big money heads dollar heads say iam too fast when my engine has old tech not new everything big money crap:thebirdm: just going by my experiences not saying other brand cars dont make good power

really? i have always been told to go around water when using street tires, maybe its just my local track cant be bothered filling waterbox after tread spins water out lol i dont know???

if someone uses the box, they always fill her back up.

usually i give it a dry hop before i back into the box, if it sticks.. i don't even bother heating up the BFG drag radials.

Are we talking drag radials which technically are still street tires,or real street tires with deep treads,if we're talking real street tires at the tracks i run at they direct you around the water,so as not to get the water in the treads and have it dripping off on the starting line, drag radials i roll right through and heat em' up...

that makes sense, i think the g force tires have deep groves my bfg drag radials have little tread mostly flat, the hoosier quick time pros have just a couple lines

...racing on the street and racing on a properly prepared race surface are two different things..

Dead set right - at the track this 440 Blown Cuda would have killed me - but he had three problems -

1. Traction - broke loose on the 1-2 and 2-3 change

2. Manual shift - couldnt control the torque

3. No rear end set up - Im running a snubber and clamps - he's running nix......

I hope you've picked a set distance for this race, none of this "Fast and Foolish" run to 120 mph on the street rubbish....

The race in the vid was to 70 mph - thats all you need to prove a point -

OK - Sorry I missed you saying its at the track -

Traction is the deal...3 car lengths is alot to make up -

Im on you as long as you hook. (Practice your launches BIG TIME!!)
