Hi,

I have an AAR firberglass hood that i need to get painted pretty soon. I know how to paint, but i dont know much about paint itself. I think i read somewhere here that it takes a special type of paint or some special prep. so my questions are:

What type of paint do i need? (will be painting it flat black)
What do i need to do to prep it?

I see lots of you guys have these hoods, and i'm sure alot of you painted them yourselves and can help me out!

Thanks,

STeve

nobody knows?

I'll tell ya what I did since I don't paint, period. There's a guy close to where I live that rebuilds vets, which are mostly fiberglass (the old ones). So I says self if this guy can rebuild vets and paint them he must know what he's doing so I took the whole car with AAR hood to him and 500 bucks.

i already spent the money on the hood and shipping, i dont want to spend more to pay someone to paint it when i think i can do it, or at least give it a try first. I've rebuilt most of my car by reading and asking questions here, figured i could continue doing the same.

Thanks,

Steve

A little advice, it yours is a six pack hood check the back side of the scoop center spoke. Mine was really thin so I filled the backside up with resin epoxy to strenghten it up.

My AAR hood came with painting instructions. If yours doesn`t include instructions just give them a call and they`ll tell you what to do. I don`t recall it requiring any special treatment but you may want to add the paint additive that used with plastic bumpers since there is a bit of flex diagonally.

yes, it is a 6 pack, i'll check that center spoke out. And i will give AAR a call as i dont have anything about painting instrucitons.

Thanks!

Maybe try a body shop in your area and ask them for advice. And if they don't help you will know not to take a vehicle there anytime soon. I have a buddy that owns a shop and I ask him questions alot.

I've got an AAR 6pack hood. I doesn't require special prep. You can scuff the gel coat with 220 and lay down some primer. I used epoxy first but you could start with surfacer. The AAR hoods are very good but not perfect. I fixed some low spots first (around the scoop).

Once the surface is prepped you can lay down some sealer followed by your top coat. People use a lot of different things for the black. PPG/Ditzler’s modern version of the “Organisol Black” formula - DCC-9355, is available too.

Consider grounding the hood somehow when you paint it. The fiberglass generates static electricity which is a magnet for dust.
