1974 Dodge Colt????

-
Early econo-box family. Extremely similar in shape to Datsun B210 4 cyl rwd.
As I recall they were somewhat popular with the drag racers in the 70's...

I think it would make a fun daily driver with current gas prices, plus the pistol grip shifter is awesome!

These things (the Pro Stock Hemi-Powered versions) were beasts. They were notorious for being ill-handling - but they were FAST. The NHRA repeatedly monkeyed with the weight factors and wheelbase requirements in an attempt to keep them from dominating. By '78 - '79 all the Mopar Pro Stock guys had switched to Arrows with small block W-2 power because of this. They were something special when they first came out though; Billy "The Kid" Stepps had one of the nastiest ones...

My pals dad had one where he swapped in a /6. The engine was fairly built and it was not bad off the NOS. Something like mid-13's. With the spray it ripped really strong, like low 12's or something.

As I remember it was also pretty efficient.

It took alot of work to build, but not much cash all things considered.

WOW that thing is neat, I would love to have that for a daily driver! :). They would often stuff hemi's or 440's in them and they were crazy. They were eventually banned from NHRA for they just being too scary. My dad actually has the door off the Yankee Peddler car which crashed at Connecticut Dragway! I Would love to have that!

There was one on CL Seattle the other day with a 318 in it for cheap.

The econo box I want is an Omni GLHS. GLHS stood for "Goes Like Hell Somemore" no joke Shelby built and nammed them and they only made 500.

There are some guys around here building those.. they are major sleepers, they may be a bit newer than 74 but they all use mitsubishi drivetrains. and the early 90s eclipse turbo engines are a bolt in (apparantly)
one of the guys i know just broke into the 10s just before he sold it... he said the handling was just too scary..

with a small block in it,but they are very hard to find around here. Most of them were junked years ago, when i was a kid.It would be cool to have a small block in one with the stock wheels on,narrowed 8.75 drilled for 4 bolt, lol

Grumpy Jenkins used to run one of those I think. That may have been around the same time NHRA figured out he was running nitrous and was using the cage as the tank

Grumpy was still running his Vega at the time. I have shots of him running against Ronnie Sox in the Hemi Colt from NY National Speedway from 1975.

I would love to get a hold one a them Colts. They look pretty awesome. I have never seen one before.

Grumpy? Nitrous??? Aw come on! Next thing you'll want us to believe is that Smokey Yunick somehow fudged on his interpretation of the NASCAR Rule Book... LOL!!!

Seems I remember a story about Smokey's car not passing tech. And after they pulled the fuel cell from it, he drove the car away.......

Always loved those cars. Guess I have a thing for tiny cars what with all the Minis. Really like the look of them when used for drag racing from way back. Of course, at least for me, like the Arrow, Gremlin, Kadett etc. as drag cars too.

I have one in my driveway. It was my first car. I always wanted to know how much strengthing the frame would have to get for a V8. They also have struts up front.

The automatic Colts used a 904 tranny, so torch in some front mounts, Jethro up some sort of radiator and have fun. Just about as easy as putting 318's in Postal Jeeps and stuffing Wagoneer motors in Gremlins. A 440 in a Scout II is the same concept.

Thats sweet ! I wonder how hard it is to get a small block in one of these things, considering they probably only weigh around 2500 lbs they would be mini monsters!

LOL...They are mean done right! My buddy had one full framed colt 440/6 bottom end Indy heads on alky ran best of 9.90's.I have a pic somewhere if I can find it I'll post it.

Ya I think they first came out in 1971. The Plymouth Cricket and Dodge Colt. They were rebadged British Austins and Japanese mitsubishi's.

I had a 74 Colt in the 70`s when the oil embargo fiasco was going on. She was sort of a mustard yellow and had a smogged down 2000cc 4 cyl. that was a total POS. It`s no wonder people wanted to yank those engines and drop in 340`s. I thought of it myself after seeing some at the racetrack. As some mentioned already a lot of the big guys were stuffing Hemis in the Colts and Arrows and due to their short wheelbases they were hard to control. They didn`t last too long. Some are still around though, here`s a picture I took a couple months ago at Va. Motorsports Park, I believe this was a 440 car. Here`s an Arrow too.

Now I can't stop thinking about how cool and fun it would be to cram a 360 in a Colt.

Bone stock dented, rusty, primer spots, nasty Colt with this sticking out of the hood :snakeman:

Damn it I have too many projects as it is right now, how do I get these evil thoughts out of my head?
