Hey guys,

im just about ready to start prepping my car for paint. Im going to be sanding it, but not down to bare metal...the problem is that my car is outside and cannot be garaged...if i sand down the car from 80 grit all the way to 320 or 400 wet and it sits outside, would anything bad happen to the paint? how about if it rains? Like i said im not going down to baremetal and any bare metal i would obviously cover, but like i said im worried about the rain touching it since this will be over the course of a few weeks. any help would be great

as a professional,i water sand and wash cars right before i paint them,i just mak sure there all the way dry before any paint goes on,so moisture is trapped under the paint.Moisture will come out from under paint,if its painted over, but its usually not a pretty sight, lol

You might be going to bare metal if you start with 80 grit!

as long as you do not go down to baremetal you should be fine. if it deos rain just go out and dry it off as soon as you can

hemipar, when you say if it does rain to go dry it off, do you mean that i should dry it off even if i havent gone to bare metal?

Not only rain......you are gonna have bird doo, pollen, bugs, neighborhood cats etc...to deal with over the course of a few weeks

Rent a public storage unit if you don't have a garage. Where you gonna paint the car? Hitting the car with 80 grit you are probably gonna show some bare metal in places.

I suggest sanding with 60 or 80 grit to bare metal , 1 panel at a time and then using epoxy primer Say 2 coats, it's waterproof and will give you the "time" to get all the way around the car. It is more $$$ but Regular primer is pourous and you have to sand n re-prime if you leave it outdoors. A total waste of $ IMO

ive been doing body work on my duster for the past 6 months. if your going to leave it outside i would get a tarp or car cover that is water proof cuz that is your best bet to keep it from rusting or getting too dirty. if you go down to bare metal like at the edges of a panel or the body line get some laquer paint and cover the metal so rust wont form.

Yes. even if you don't go to bare metal you don't want the water sitting on your car for long periods. even the dew in the morning will not be the best thing for your car.
and i second the idea of doing one panel at a time. will cost more up front but save in the end, plus you will be able to take to bare metal and see whats under the paint. when i started on my car did not look to bad. but after i started to sand I found the whole passenger 1/4 was covered in bondo from and accident. no rust just a big a$$ dent that had 3/4inch of bondo to fill it.
plus if the car is drivable you can still drive and sand PARTS.

can you buy epoxy primer in spray cans at your local department store, or do you need to go to a specialty paint place?

Not sure. i have not looked for it in spray cans. you may be able to get it from a paint supplier. some O'reiley's does paint mixing, may check there.

Advance Auto sells Duplicolor, they have etching primer and epoxy primer in paint bombs.....
